LWL-Industriemuseum Zeche Nachtigall
One free entry to the museum without the visitors' mine. Is not valid for events with special admission.
Experience the pioneering era of mining – history comes alive at the Zeche Nachtigall in the Ruhr Valley in Witten. The museum takes you back to the time when horizontal tunnels were driven into the slopes to mine coal. Equipped with a helmet and a miner's lamp you can reach a real coal seam in the visitors' mine through low passages (for a small extra charge). In the exhibition about the "Hercules" shaft from 1832, one of the first underground shafts in the area, you can learn about the technology and difficult working conditions for miners in the 19th century, while everything revolves around a historical steam engine in the engine room.
We also recommend going for a stroll at >> Kemnade Lake.
